Meeting the Long-Term Need to Support Legacy Semiconductor 200mm Wafer Fabrication Tools

Semicon wafer fabrication tools have evolved from 100mm to 200mm, and now 300mm wafers, which are active today. A complete move from 200mm to 300mm tools as an industry standard was charged to occur around 2007, but instead 200mm tools made an unexpected comeback.

Wafer fabrication tools in 200mm size first appeared in 1990 and became the industry standard for years. Over time, 200mm was expected to decline as chipmakers began to transfer to 300mm fabs in the 2000s. However, around 2014-15, the industry saw an unexpected surge for chips made in 200mm fabs. This overwhelmed the supply chain, causing shortages of 200mm fab capacity, which remains a struggle today—a lot of demand with a lot less supply.

Why the rebound in 200mm fab tools? A big reason is that a lot of growing technologies entering the market surrounding the Internet of Things (IoT) aren’t necessarily made with chips from newer 300mm Semicon foundries. Many of the components used in automotive vehicles, smartphones—and additional IoT devices—require MEMS, analog, and RF chips. These can be made more efficiently from a 200mm wafer.

Growing demand for MEMS, analog, and RF chips continues to cause critical shortages for both 200mm fab capacity and equipment. With no signs of demand letting up, customers needing to meet the need of wafer fabrication are looking for access to—and maintenance of—past, phased-out 200mm computer platforms.
